Get ready to give! Giving Tuesday, also known as the global day of giving, is coming up on November 27, 2018. Giving Tuesday is the official beginning of the charitable season. Celebrated on the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for local nonprofits to raise funds and awareness for our community. Please remember LIFT in your Giving Tuesday plans!
On Friday, September 14, more than 450 LIFT supporters and friends gathered in the Omni Dallas Hotel to raise a glass to LIFT’s adult literacy programs at the 6th Annual Toast to Literacy. The night was a huge success, exceeded revenue goals, and had more sponsors and guests than previous events!
This year’s Toast to Literacy was chaired by Sharon Anderson Wright, President and CEO of Half Price Books, and her family. The featured speaker was social entrepreneur Larry James, CEO of CitySquare and author of House Rules: Insights for Innovative Leaders.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a success!

Partners are critical to expanding LIFT’s services to fulfill its mission to serve low-literate adults. This past spring, representatives from LIFT and Texas Capital Bank met to explore how their two organizations could work together to help low-literate adults living in West Dallas. An idea was put forth to offer free ESL classes in the bank’s Community Room using instructors and curriculum provided by LIFT.
LIFT and Texas Capital Bank decided to test this idea by offering one 10-week ESL Basic Level class, which would be held in the bank’s Community Room and managed by LIFT. The class was funded through a Texas Capital Bank grant and marketed to employees of Trinity Groves, located directly across the street from the bank. The class launched on July 10 with 12 students. In late September, five of these students completed the Basic Level of the ESL program.
Following the successful summer pilot, LIFT recruited more adults for fall ESL classes at the bank. LIFT worked with Trinity River Mission and AVANCE in October to market the free ESL classes to families in West Dallas. The Texas Capital Bank ESL classes are offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. To register for January 2019 classes, please call 214.824.2000.
