DALLAS – Larry James, the CEO of CitySquare and a Dallas social entrepreneur and author, will speak at Toast to Literacy on September 14, 2018 at the Omni Dallas Hotel. All proceeds from the event will benefit Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT), a non-profit provider of adult literacy programs across Texas.
Larry is well known in the faith, business and media communities as a committed servant to the people of East and South Dallas. He oversaw the development of CitySquare’s Opportunity Center on Malcolm X Boulevard where LIFT is headquartered. He is also the author of The Wealth of the Poor, and House Rules: Considerations for Leaders, which is set to be released in June.
“Larry is an exceptional leader who has made an incredible impact in Dallas and the state,” said Linda K. Johnson, President and CEO of LIFT. “LIFT is very privileged to have him involved in our event this year, and looks forward to our attendees learning about how they can extend their leadership in our community.”
Other extraordinary North Texans involved in Toast to Literacy include Sharon Anderson Wright, President and CEO of Half Price Books, and her family. Wright will co-chair the event with her sister, Ellen O’Neal, Chair of the Half Price Books Board of Directors, her nephew, Brady O’Neal, Vice President of Risk Management and Safety for Half Price Books, and her niece, Emily O’Neal Ferguson, Donations and Community Outreach Coordinator for Half Price Books.
“We are grateful for the decades-long friendship between Half Price Books and LIFT. We are also thrilled to be working with Sharon and her family as we plan this year’s event,” said Johnson.
Wright, the daughter of Half Price Books founder Pat Anderson, began working at Half Price Books at the age of 13, sorting and shelving paperbacks. She has gone from one of the company’s first employee to its President and CEO. She has helped the company expand from a single 1,000 square foot converted laundromat into the nation’s largest family-owned new and used bookstore chain.
Half Price Books has been a supporter of literacy and environmental groups for more than 45 years, and a friend of LIFT for decades.
“My family and I are honored to serve as co-chairs for this year’s Toast to Literacy,” said Wright. “Half Price Books and LIFT share a love of literacy, along with values of respecting and lifting up those we serve. We are proud to be part of this effort and support LIFT in the important work they do to increase literacy and improve lives in North Texas.”
The Toast to Literacy provides critical financial support to LIFT, helping to underwrite literacy programs that help thousands of adults annually learn to read and write, prepare for the high school equivalency exam, speak English, and develop workforce readiness skills.
